Conference celebrates role of older people from ethnic minorities in Scottish society

Trust, Hanover (Scotland) and Bield Housing Associations were today (6th October) celebrating the role that older people from ethnic minorities play in Scottish society at the first ever national conference to celebrate this vibrant cross section of Scottish society. The conference also marks the 10th Anniversary of the Equal Opportunities Programme, set up by Trust, Hanover (Scotland) and Bield Housing Associations which supports people of all ages from across the Black Minority and Ethnic (BME) communities in Scotland.

Ethnic Minority Older People's National Event

This is the first ever Ethnic Minority Older People's National Event. It will take place on 6 October 2009 at the Inchyra Grange Hotel, Falkirk from 10.00am until 3.00pm. The event is being organised in partnership with the Scottish Government's Older People and Age Team. The conference will mark the 10th Anniversary of the Equal Opportunities Programme in Scotland which is run by Trust, Hanover (Scotland) and Bield Housing Associations, and will highlight our achievements of supporting people of all ages from the BME communities across Scotland. Some of the people who have been helped by the project will appear in a short film to be shown at the conference. Mr Alex Neil, Minister for Housing & Communities will be the key note speaker, and Sabine Schultz of Active Ageing of Migrant Elders Across Europe, from Germany, will also be speaking.

Making a Difference Report - Job Opportunities Support Project
The Job Opportunities Support Project was developed in February 2006 with the main purpose being to increase access to job opportunities for Black and Minority Ethnic people in housing and the public sectors, within Edinburgh and the Lothians. The Project has delivered benefits to the lives of many individuals, including improved skills, increased confidence and greater financial independence.

This will be held at Mayfield Community Centre, Sunnybank Road, Stirling on Saturday 13th June. The event begins at 11am, and all are welcome to attend.


"New Face for Europe" conference brings experts together in Bonn

First European Conference
“Minority Ethnic and Migrant Elders across Europe - from Challenges to Opportunities” from 30 September to 2 October 2008, will provide the first opportunity to have discussions with top-class scientists and experts of various specialisations. Apart from the promotion of international dialogue between experts in theory and practice, this conference will help to raise European public awareness of the significance of cultural diversity for elders.

01 October 2008:
First key conference day on World Senior Citizens' Day

02 October 2008:
Second key conference day and the closing-off of the conference with the best practice awards ceremony and the adoption of the memorandum

Venue: World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB: http://www.worldccbonn.com), the former building of the German parliament (Bundestag).

target groups

• A total number of 350-500 delegates from EU member countries
• A wide international circle from the political, business, voluntary, legal and academic sectors and the relevant communities at large will be approached.
• Measures will be taken to reach a high proportion of migrant delegates.

To be able to reach the target group, relevant NGOs and voluntary organisations will be contacted in time. During the whole conference migrant elders will be the subject and not the object of the event. No distinction will be made between "us" and "them".

The conference should be a balanced mixture between theory and practice:

• theory: papers delivered by experts on politics and scientific research
• practice: good practice examples from EU member states

Care Commission the first regulator "Happy To Translate"
The Care Commission is the first regulator in Scotland to sign up for the “Happy to Translate” initiative, which will help people to better understand, in many different languages, how to use or choose a good care service in Scotland.

Best Small Exhibition Stand – Award

“HAPPY TO TRANSLATE” LOGO CHOSEN
Using an extensive survey, Scotland’s communities have chosen the official “Happy to Translate” Logo.  The successful Logo received an overwhelming majority vote from amongst three very different design choices.

HOUSING EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES MANAGER RECEIVES “HOUSING SCOTLAND AWARD
The Associations are proud to announce that Rohini Sharma was awarded the inaugural Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) “Housing Scotland” Award.  The theme of the award was “Excellence in Innovation” and recognised Rohini’s “pro-active and energetic approach” to race awareness and equal opportunities, particularly for older people.
