Research Report (PDF)

As part of its ongoing effort to promote equal opportunities for all communities in Scotland, Trust, Hanover (Scotland) and Bield Housing Associations developed the concept of the “Happy to Translate” Logo Initiative.  In January 2003, the initiative received grant funding from the Scottish Executive and Communities Scotland. The initiative was previously funded by the Scottish Government and Communities Scotland.

The “Happy to Translate” Logo will be a key tool in providing Black and Minority Ethnic communities with equal access to information and services, as required by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.  Participating public sector organisations will display the official logo on their literature and in reception areas to let non-English readers and speakers know they will provide quality translation and interpreting services.  The use of the logo will include good practice guidelines and monitoring and evaluation techniques in order to establish and maintain a customer-oriented approach for the provision of language assistance.

The Associations are delighted by the initial support of the Scottish Executive and Communities Scotland in developing this project, and the Logo will be an integral part of the former’s strategic commitment to develop better communication between service providers and Black and Minority Ethnic communities.
